PROJECT PHOTON: MULTI-SITE SOLAR ROOF INSTALLATIONS
Leveraging on our extensive rooftop spaces, we installed acres of solar panels creating vast spaces of energy generation at MAS facilities in Sri Lanka.
Since 2008, we have powered one of our key facilities with 25.6 MW of solar energy and continue to expand on our solar energy generation today, setting up South Asia’s largest rooftop installation at the time. Project Photon is our initiative to boost the development of solar PV on rooftops and is currently the largest multi-site roof mounted solar initiative in Sri Lanka and one of the largest in the region.
This pioneering initiative of such an ambitious scale, forged partnerships with domain experts and collaborations with public utility authorities, demanding in-depth structural and geographical evaluations, research, and analyses of rooftop solar systems.
The electricity harvested is exported to Sri Lanka’s national grid, aligning with the government’s renewable energy drive. The weather monitors linked to all 18 locations make MAS the first and only company to have comprehensive, real time and historical solar irradiance measurements. This data gives crucial insights for renewable investments as it can be used for research on solar energy yield and utilization, based on variables such as geographical locations and climate conditions.
