Nawala Urban Wetland Park Canal
The City of Colombo is built on a mosaic of thirty-six wetland patches, connected through a nearly 50 km long man-made canal system. Colombo’s vision of parks along canals will improve the ecological function of urban waterways, detain stormwater flows, avoid encroachment into rivers, and provide more open space for residents to enjoy. The Nawala urban wetland park is situated in Nugegoda and is a wetland of Kirulapone Canal. Kirulapone canal is a branch of Diyawanna Oya, the mother of several wetlands.
In partnership with MAS ACTIVE, we were able to deploy the 60th Ocean Strainer at this crucial location in Colombo District and the intervention is preventing floating debris entering the wetland. By the end of 2024, 2640 kg of mixed waste was trapped in this strainer, and collected by Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation (SLLDC).
