As part of the island-wide Surakimu Ganga (Protect Our Rivers) initiative, the Central Environment Authority in the Ministry of Environment installed an Ocean Strainer at the St. Sebastien Canal (South), Maligawatta, in October 2021. The waste is cleared by the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, which sends most of it to a waste-to-energy generation facility. As of October 2022, this Strainer diverts an estimated 62,400 kilograms of waste from the ocean each year.
